Our perception of discarded and reclaimed materials is evolving as we recognise their intrinsic value as precious resources.

Metamorphosis, an exhibition by design-maker Marlo Lyda, presents the beginnings of a profound transformation as mined waste becomes usable artifacts for contemporary life. A hands-on workshop led by Lyda will provide insight into the Metamorphosis exhibition.

Situated in the urban hub of Sydney's Central Station, Metamorphosis is a thought-provoking journey following the trail of resources extracted from Australian soil as they undergo processes of reinterpretation and potential reuse. Lyda's exhibition showcases the possibilities that emerge when empirical research and intuition-led design practices are combined to reimagine waste as a precious resource.

Speaker

Marlo Lyda is an Australian-born designer-maker and Powerhouse design resident currently based in Sydney. With a deep-rooted commitment to celebrating the inherent beauty of makers and materials, Lyda's practice embodies a harmonious blend of creativity, resourcefulness and purpose. Coaxing delicate yet functional objects from rarely considered resources, Lyda’s work provokes a reassessment of the intrinsic value embedded in overlooked ‘waste’ materials. Graduating cum laude from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2021, Lyda draws from her education in the Netherlands to bring together design thinking with a hands-on approach to creation and collaboration. Her work has been exhibited at Dutch Design Week, as well as throughout Australia.

Workshop

Join Marlo Lyda in an inspiring workshop to explore the intrinsic value of urban and mining waste streams, such as copper tailings, fly ash, reclaimed timber, red brick, and more. Under Marlo's tutelage, engage with these valuable material resources, envisioning their transformation into usable artifacts for contemporary life. Through guided sketching and material exploration, you will playfully explore what these resources contain, and how they might integrate into objects, furniture, lighting, or other experimental forms, embracing waste as a precious resource and fostering a mindful approach to design.
