Join architect Sumayya Vally and food creative Karima Hazim for a very special Sunday breakfast featuring traditional Lebanese recipes that celebrate family, food and culture.

Passed down through generations, family recipes serve as archives of important cultural shifts, including migration and trade. This alternative method of documenting culture was the focus of Sumayya Vally’s research project for the 5th Istanbul Design Biennial in 2020. Vally will join local chef Karima Hazim at Parramatta restaurant Baba Ghanouj as they prepare a traditional Lebanese Sunday breakfast.

Speakers

Sumayya Vally leads Counterspace, an award-winning architecture and research practice with offices in Johannesburg and London. She was named Emerging Architect of the Year at the 2023 Dezeen Awards and was artistic director of the inaugural Islamic Arts Biennale that same year. In 2021 Vally was the youngest architect to design the annual Serpentine Pavilion in London. Her practice explores identity, community, belonging and gathering.

Karima Hazim established Sunday Kitchen with her mother Sivine Tabbouch, an initiative focused on traditional Lebanese recipes and family rituals passed down through generations of women. Their cooking demonstrations are hands-on celebrations of culture and storytelling giving insights into what foods feed our soul.
